Foundation Flash - Free Flash/ActionScript Tutorials & Help

Hello and welcome to Foundation Flash. Here you can find a vast selection of completely free tutorials which will help anyone, "newbie" or "geek", to learn how to create awe-inspiring Flash animations and code interactive games. To show our commitment to helping everyone learn Flash, we release a new free Flash tutorial every Tuesday (or Wednesday if we forget on Tuesday).

If you don't have the software with which to develop Flash or need some extra help, we also sell some Flash essentials in our new store, accessible from the main navigation bar.

Major reforms to the site

Over the next few weeks you will notice a substantial number of changes to the site. As a politician might say, this is to streamline the site and secure its ongoing future. In short though, this site will become 100% commited to providing free tutorials and help. We can now do this because our paid-for projects will be moving to a new site called Dreamed Up Design. Don't worry though - good ol' Foundation Flash is here to stay.

So what are the benefits?

  • Small amounts of advertising will cover the increasing cost of maintaining the site, so you won't have to.
  • No more confusion about whether something's free or not (it's all going to be free).
  • More screen space devoted to tutorials, and the streamlining of our processes.
  • Better search rankings, so more visitors. Maybe we'll see the return of the comments boxes. Or maybe not.
  • It'll be easier for us to add new tutorials and keep expanding the site. If you would like to write one for us, get in touch using the 'contact' link at the top.

So, you see, this is going to be good news for everyone.

Run-time Errors

What happened to yesterday's tutorial?

So, there I am on Monday, all set to leave for a short break, and chatting to Leon:

Harry: You'll have to do the tutorial tomorrow (...)
Leon: I'll try.
Sometime later
Harry: You're doing the tutorial tomorrow, right?
Leon: I heard. Yes.

Is it really that much to ask?

Yes, it's part 3 of the series of tutorials where we make the game 'Avoider', and it's available now. And yes, this tutorial was published on time (yesterday), and no, I didn't forgot because I was too busy doing nothing. You're already a day late I tell you, so go quickly to the new tutorial!

Yes, I did...

...release a new tutorial on Tuesday, you just didn't hear it here, because I was having some problems accessing the source files. Everything's okay now though, and you can view the tutorial in all its glory. It's about making an Avoider type game. It's the funnesu game we've made so far to play, so check it out.

An Update

Yes, you heard me, an update. From me. I know it sounds ridiculous, as apparently I've been doing no work at all. Sorry about the lack of tutorial this week, but I do have something very handy for you. At the side of every page you will now notice a little speech bubble. This is so you can talk to either us or harry online, in case you don't understand something. We hope you find this handy, and please appreciate, that although we may be online a lot of the time, there are only two of us, and we cannot be expected to answer all questions all the time, but we will try to answer as many as possible.

An apology

Oh come on now Leon, you could have released a tutorial yesterday. With me off on a German exchange, Leon obviously thinks that there is absolutely no internet connection in Germany at the moment, and thus, I cannot check up on him. Well I have a message for him - Es gibt, ich kann und ich werde. Danke.

At least I can be relied upon, I will release a tutorial next Tuesday, which will be a whole new game (as there is no sign of turret game part 3 from Leon).

See you for that

New tutorial

As I move from AS2 into AS3, I've decided to try and express my new knowledge in form of a poem: Packages, packages, the most essential of things, it keeps your classes organised and umm.... Oh forget it, just read the tutorial

A New Tutorial

As, seemingly, one of Leon's free Flash tutorials has not be forthcoming, it is my pleasure to announce the release of one of my own tutorials, and hopefully Leon's tutorial will turn up some time before next Tuesday. This week's free tutorial is about the Timer class - it's new in ActionScript 3, but is powerful, easy to use and manipulate and a natural evolution from setInterval and functions like it.

Leon's tutorial was going to be about finishing his turret game in AS2, so stay tuned for that.
